State-sponsored Chinese hackers have infiltrated critical U.S infrastructure networks, the United States, its Western allies and Microsoft said Wednesday while warning that similar espionage attacks could be occurring globally.

Raising the alarm, Microsoft says critical infrastructure in the U.S. has been breached by state-sponsored Chinese hackers with a goal of disrupting the country's communications in Asia in the event of a regional crisis. The tech giant said the group, dubbed Volt Typhoon, has been operating since mid-2021 and they've been able to infiltrate organizations by exploiting vulnerabilities in a popular cyber security platform called FortiGuard. In this campaign, the affected organizations span the communications, manufacturing, utility, transportation, construction, maritime, government, information technology and education sectors. The U.S. National Security Agency, along with the other members of the Five Eyes Intelligence Network, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the U.K., released a report warning that Chinese hacking was likely occurring globally. A report that on Thursday drew the ire of the Chinese government. We have taken note of the report. I would like to say that it is a report that has been patched together with a serious lack of evidence and is extremely unprofessional. It is clear that this is a collective disinformation campaign by the U.S. to mobilize the countries in the Five Eyes Alliance for geopolitical purposes. While officials say the focus for now seems to be on spying and intelligence gathering rather than destructive cyber attacks, the fact that Guam was targeted has raised alarm bells in Washington. Should China choose to attack Taiwan, any U.S. response would most likely involve Guam. The territory is home to Anderson Air Force Base, which would be a launching point for missions to help defend the island, as well as a port for American submarines and destroyers.

The official relations between China and the US could be severely strained, but Beijing is welcoming top American business leaders with open arms. Meanwhile, Nvidia Corp. CEO Jensen Huang is heading to China to meet with tech executives, according to people familiar with the matter.
