Actor Michael Caine has just inked a deal with an AI company to license his voice, and the end result sounds like this. My name is Michael Caine. You know, I've played many roles in my life, both on and off the screen, but now I've got a question for you. What makes a voice iconic? Is it the tone? I just want to clarify, that's not him actually speaking, but that is him. So Caine isn't alone in showing support for generative content, but there's still a chorus of voices calling the tech a bridge too far. Tricia Kindleman has been following this story for us, so lots of debate on the selling of one's voice for AI companies. Explain what's going on here. Yeah, so I guess if you want to look at it from one perspective, at least there is this company and they are getting permission from these actors and from people to at least compensate them appropriately for using their likeness. And we know there is a lot of AI generated materials out there that are unauthorized and aren't actually appropriately compensating the people who they might be appearing in them and that sort of thing. So now this is Eleven Labs. It was founded in 2022. Matthew McConaughey has also just recently inked a deal with them. Now he was an initial investor supporter early on for this company, but now he is going to be allowing them to use his voice and likeness. Now he's using it slightly differently than Michael Caine. Michael Caine going to be using his voice on the Eleven Reader app. So, you know, he could read your latest novel to you. But Matthew McConaughey actually was working on a project and he wanted to use his own voice, but in a different language. So let's take a listen to what that sounds like. So now that's McConaughey's very, very notable voice, but speaking a language that he doesn't normally speak. So now that's one way this tool is being used, but again, a variety of uses for it and a variety of reactions to this new technology. On one end, Mad Max director George Miller actually submitted some of his work to an AI film festival. And he says that it's the most dynamically evolving tool that they can use in the industry. The Actors Union, though, feeling very, very differently about that. SAG-AFTRA has talked about how disappointed they are that this is becoming something that is being leaned on in Hollywood. In a statement that they released a while back after a synthetic actress was being used, this is what they had to say. It's saying, from what we've seen, audiences aren't interested in watching computer-generated content untethered from the human experience. So some strong words and some strong feelings there. They went on to say it doesn't solve any problem. It creates the problem of using stolen performances to put actors out of work. Now, again, so a lot of feelings there. Clearly they are concerned. Netflix has said they are going full steam ahead with AI in a variety of different projects. Also worth noting that Warner Music Group CEO has also said that they're trying to embrace AI tools in the music industry as well.
