Following her death on November 6, her legacy continues to be honored by her former teams and coaches. The University of Washington team dedicated their first Big Ten title win to her memory, while Redwood High School and Marin FC plan to commemorate her by naming an award after her and wearing orange ribbons on their jerseys.

A 21-year-old soccer player at the University of Washington died on Thursday after being diagnosed with a rare form of kidney cancer back in April. Mia Hammett grew up in Cordomandera, played for Marin F.C., and attended Redwood High School. KTVU sports reporter Bailey O'Carroll sat down with Hammett's high school coach to talk about the legacy she leaves behind. Before Mia Hammett was a superstar goalkeeper at the University of Washington, before she became known across the country for sharing details of her battle against cancer, Hammett was a star on and off the field here. At Redwood High School in Larkspur, Hammett spent countless hours honing her craft under the guidance of Ivan Bandov. I was a goalkeeper as well, so I think what stuck out is she had this amazing athletic ability and being tall, she had this presence you can't really teach. And probably like me too, she kind of wore her emotions on her sleeve, so you knew what you were getting, but I loved it. Bandov coached Hammett for three years in high school in club soccer. On Thursday, he was here, on the field where he spent so much time with Hammett when he heard the devastating news. I was in the middle of a Redwood practice, I think it was maybe 4 o'clock, and I got a text. I just sunk, and I'm sure I stopped talking. You know it can come at some point with stage four, but when it actually hit, it's like an empty feeling, especially someone so young and everything in front of her. In April, Hammett was diagnosed with an extremely rare form of stage four kidney cancer. She bravely shared her fight on social media for all to see. The fact that she was that open and willing to share her story guaranteed impacted thousands of people for life, and I think that's the greatest gift that she gave. On November 6th, her fight may have come to an end. Her impact didn't. A key piece of the Washington Huskies is missing here at Energizer Park this afternoon. In St. Louis, Missouri, on November 9th, Hammett's University of Washington team beat Michigan State in a shootout to win the university's first Big Ten title. Chance to win it for the Huskies. She shoots, and she scores! The team said they felt Hammett's presence on the pitch. We just thought about her and what she would want for us, and we knew that she would want us to be happy and to celebrate her life more than mourn it. In Seattle, Washington, Husky Stadium glowing orange for Hammett, and on her home turf here at Redwood High School, Vandav will see to it that no one forgets Mia Hammett. I'm going to be someone who's going to share her story with anyone I coach for the rest of my life.
