The campaign has surpassed initial population estimates due to increased movement of people fleeing violence. The region has seen control by M23 rebels, resulting in approximately 3,000 deaths and the displacement of around 7 million people this year.

A missile vaccination campaign is still ongoing in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, in the Massissi Territory. The campaign is mainly targeting thousands of children in the region that has recorded alarming numbers of cases. Local health care workers were supported by Doctors Without Borders team, who had been called in to support them as the outbreak took off over recent months amid an ongoing conflict that is now one of the world's largest displaced persons crisis. Well, the first challenge is from a population estimation point of view, because from the point of view of the vaccination campaign, the target population that we estimated, we are now more than that. Why? Because there is a population movement. The larger Massissi Territory that is home to Rubaya has been under M23 control since the group took large swaths of territory, including eastern capitals Goma and Bukavu, earlier this year. The rebels advance has killed some 3,000 people this year, and was in what was already one of the world's largest humanitarian crisis, with around 7 million people displaced.
