A man was shot and killed by three Queensland Police officers near the Townsville Strand after reportedly threatening people with a knife and machete. Police attempted to subdue the man with a taser, but it was unsuccessful, and officers say the man then lunged at them, prompting them to fire their service weapons.

The incident is being investigated by the Ethical Standards Command to determine whether the officers' actions were appropriate. The area remains a crime scene, and it is not yet clear how many shots were fired. The event has left the victim's family and the involved officers deeply affected.

There was nothing that could be done to save this man after he was shot at several times by three Queensland Police constables, one with just 10 months experience. It's horrific. It's horrific. We may very well have seen multiple casualties, murders and possibly people being injured on the Strand today. It is truly a devastating event for the police involved and also for the family and friends of the victim. It happened just before 10 this morning. Police called to the Strand. Witnesses said the man was threatening others with a knife and a machete. Police engaged with this male person which has resulted in a failed taser deployment and this male person fleeing into Mitchell Street. 10 News told officers yelled repeatedly telling the man to drop his blades. Instead, authorities say he lunged at them. Three police officers have used their service firearms and shot multiple shots hitting this male person. Whether the male tried to stab or use the knife on the officers involved will form part of the investigation. That investigation will be led by the Ethical Standards Command flying in this afternoon from Brisbane. They'll look at whether the actions of police were appropriate or if they had no other choice but to use lethal force. We never know what we're going to turn up to each day. Unfortunately today we've seen a tragic incident occur where a male person has been shot. Tonight a crime scene remains in place. It'll likely be tomorrow before residents at this unit block can return home. It's not clear how many rounds were fired or how many struck the man leaving his family and three junior officers to process the unimaginable. Matt Johnston, 10 News.
