A former San Diegan is battling a flesh-eating disease after a stingray sting at Black's Beach.

A former San Diego resident, Richard Wolfe, was stung by a stingray during a visit to Black's Beach. Initially experiencing pain and a minor wound, Wolfe's condition quickly worsened as his foot began to swell and signs of infection appeared. Doctors diagnosed him with a rare necrotizing infection, commonly known as flesh-eating disease, which can result from bacteria in seawater entering through a stingray wound.

Medical staff at Kaiser Permanente acted quickly, performing surgery to remove infected tissue and prevent further damage. Wolfe was within hours of losing part of his foot but has since recovered. He now urges others to seek immediate medical attention if they experience unusual symptoms after a marine animal injury.
