A man remains under police guard in a Sydney hospital as homicide squad detectives investigate the stabbing death of a three year old boy. The man, who was also in the apartment with critical injuries is in a stable condition after surgery.

At this unit complex at Riverwood in South Western Sydney, police received a call at about four o'clock yesterday afternoon. It was a welfare call from a relative of a woman who is now, of the 45-year-old man, who is now in hospital and is in a stable condition. Basically when police arrived, they found a three-year-old boy who had been fatally stabbed. They found the 45-year-old man who is now believed to be the father of that child with self-inflicted stab wounds. He was in a critical condition. He was taken to hospital. He's undergone life-saving surgery and is now in a stable condition. Police have said that these kind of crimes and these kinds of scenes are some of the most horrific that they have to attend. Here's a little of what they had to say last night. Any kind of incident involving a small child is always a tragic incident and our condolences go out to the extended family of the child. And it's obviously an incident that, unfortunately, police attend domestic violence incidents all the time. We attend 140,000 incidents every year and unfortunately some of them end up in homicide. Well, this is still very much so an active crime scene. We've seen forensics come in and out all morning. Residents are having to sign in and out of the building as they come and go. We've seen bags of evidence being brought out. But neighbours here are really kind of just starting to come to terms with how such a tragic incident could unfold so close to them. Here's what one had to say. The community were just sad and just shocked. Like, I've got friends that lived here 20 years and they said nothing like this has happened. So, yeah, even people that have been living in this area for a long time. No charges have been laid at this point. Police say they are not looking for any other suspects, however. It's still in early days and police are really just looking for a motive and trying to understand what happened here in this apartment building yesterday afternoon.
