The military aircraft carrying Chilima went off radar after attempting to return to the capital, Lilongwe, due to poor visibility at Mzuzu airport. The crash occurred in the Chikangawa forest, and all passengers were killed on impact. The remains are being transported back to the capital.

Chilima was considered a potential candidate for the upcoming presidential election. He was arrested in 2022 on corruption charges, which he had denied, and the court dropped the charges last month. President Chakwera expressed his profound sorrow and held a minute of silence to honor the deceased.

The aircraft carrying Chalima left the capital, Lilongwe, on Monday morning, but was unable to land at the northern Mzuzu airport due to poor visibility. It was ordered to return to the capital but went off radar, with aviation authorities saying they were unable to make contact. Despite the track record of the aircraft and the experience of the crew, something terrible went wrong with that aircraft on its flight back to Lilongwe, sending it crashing down and killing everyone on board and leaving us all devastated and asking ourselves questions whose answers cannot take away the pain and the helplessness we feel from this loss. Chakwera said the passengers were killed on impact and that the military was bringing their remains back to the capital. Chalima had been seen as a potential candidate in next year's presidential election. He had been arrested in 2022 over corruption allegations. Chalima had denied wrongdoing and a court dropped the charges against him last month.
