A major winter storm is affecting post-Thanksgiving travel across large parts of the northern United States. Heavy lake effect snow continues near the Great Lakes, with up to two additional feet expected, particularly in areas like upstate New York, Cleveland, and New England. 

An incoming system driven by an atmospheric river is bringing rain to lower elevations in the Northwest and snow to higher elevations, impacting up to 42 million people under winter alerts. Chicago could see eight to twelve inches of snow, potentially causing significant airport delays, while the I-95 corridor is expected to avoid the heaviest snowfall by the end of the weekend.

Meteorologist Andrew Kozak from CBS News Philadelphia is here with the forecast. Andrew, good morning. Hey, good morning Kelly. Yeah, you know we've been looking at some of the storm reports especially in upstate New York last night. We had nine to ten inches this morning over a foot of snow and this will continue. Strong northwest winds. Anybody out for Black Friday shopping in these areas from Cleveland to upstate New York and even into New England going to deal with some issues out on the roadways. I want to talk about where our next big system is starting and how many people it's going to affect because the Atmospheric River, we've been talking about that, that comes into the northwest full force. So lower elevations areas like Seattle, Portland, they are getting the rain but the higher elevations getting snow and as this system moves across the northern Plains, we're talking up to 42 million people in winter alerts and we also are looking at anywhere between one and two feet of snow. Unfortunately, places like Chicago, huge hub, they're going to be looking at anywhere between eight and 12 inches, maybe a little more just outside. That's going to have a domino effect for the major airports there. So you want to be careful. I want to give you an hour by hour look as we get into this afternoon, it starts to ramp up but it's later on into your saturday that we have some heavy snow tomorrow morning, Kansas City, Little Rock has rain. This continues all the way across the northeast but moves out the I-95 corridor will miss the big snow as we head into the end of the weekend guys. All right, Andrew, that is some good news.
