Meteorologists report that over 40 million Americans are under winter weather alerts, with additional snow squall warnings issued for central Pennsylvania and significant cold air moving in.

Travel disruptions are likely as snowfall rates could reach two inches per hour in some regions, and major cities along the I-95 corridor are expected to experience rain rather than snow. The coldest temperatures of the season are anticipated, with single-digit wind chills in the northern plains and 20s to 30s along the East Coast as December begins.

Right, winter weather is threatening travel for many making their way home after Thanksgiving. Heavy lake effect snow continues to fall near the Great Lakes, with an additional one to two feet expected as much as 22 inches could pile up in Buffalo accompanied by 40 mile per hour winds like effect. Snow warnings are in place until tomorrow morning and in Ohio. The Snow Belt region will also see more snow today and the weather system is now making its way east towards Chicago where some areas could get up to 12 inches and the next winter storms are already taking shape. Potentially snarling travel from millions of Americans this weekend to break it all down for us. CBS News Philadelphia meteorologist Andrew Kozak is here with me in studio in the flesh. I'm used to seeing you in a screen. What can you tell us about about the weather? Well, it's nice to be here, Tom. Timing couldn't be any worse, right? The busiest travel weekend. We have tens of millions of Americans that are going to be affected by this, and the snow is going to be accompanied by some really cold coldest air of the season coming up. We have some snow squall warnings that have just been issued for central PA. Now we're going to continue to watch for the snow to pile up across the lake effect areas, Great Lakes, and into New England. But this the atmospheric River to the Pacific Northwest is what's going to ramp up for a large portion of the country where we have today. Over 40 million Americans that are going to be under winter alerts all the way through the end of the weekend. We could have for areas like well, Des Moines, Iowa over toward Chicago up to 14 inches of snow possible. That will slow you down and then as we head into the Northeast, we are likely to see some of that spread across the lakes. Again, Lake effect snow could equal up to two feet of snow before the week is up weekend is up. Meantime, we have some very heavy snow that will continue for the weekend for the midsection of the country. If you're traveling to places like Chicago that can domino when it comes to the delays and cancellations. Now I want to take an hour by hour as we get into Saturday rain to the South snow to the North and it really starts to ramp up by Saturday night. And into Sunday we're talking about 2 inches per hour. In some of these spots, the good news for the I-95 corridor, especially across areas like DC up to Philadelphia, New York and Boston, is that it's just a plain old rain event late in the weekend and then clears out and then the temperatures. In fact, we have some of the coldest temperatures of the season. It will feel like the single digits by Sunday and then that's going to be for the northern plains that will move across the East Coast where temperatures will feel like the 20s and 30s as we head toward the beginning of next week. So you know we're turning the clock to December coming up here on Monday and it's going to feel exactly how it should. Yeah, it's winter and it certainly feels like it. Des Moines also hometown. Right in the bullseye of all of that weather, it's going to be a big weekend. Yeah, Andrew, thank you for the update. We appreciate it.
