Voters in Madagascar headed to the polls on Thursday in a presidential election boycotted by 10 out of 12 opposition candidates and marred by weeks of violent protests.

Madagascar heads to polls in vote marred by violence

For six weeks, protesters have taken to the streets of the capital, barricading roads, lighting fires and throwing stones at the police. The demonstrators support calls for a boycott of Madagascar's presidential elections, which they say is rigged in favor of incumbent Yondre Adzuel. Nonetheless, polling locations are open Thursday, despite the fact that 10 out of 13 candidates have refused to campaign. Their campaigning program is not clear or complete. Nobody gave out flyers with their electoral manifesto, so we don't know what they want to do. Nobody tells us what they plan, so what's the point? Opposition leaders complain that Adzuel should not be able to run for re-election. In June, the media revealed that Adzuel has dual French nationality, which opponents say should cause him to lose the ability to lead the country under local law. They have also denounced electoral irregularities, alleging that there are discrepancies in the voters' role in fictitious polling stations. They worry that the election will be rubber-stamped by the High Constitutional Court and the Electoral Commission, which they say lack independence. Voters complain that the focus on Adzuel's candidacy has led to a lack of discussion vis-a-vis the serious economic issues in Madagascar. What we need with this election is for our country to move forward, because people are getting poorer and poorer. Madagascar has reserves of cobalt, gold, nickel, uranium and other minerals. Despite this, it remains one of the poorest countries in the world. Madagascar is also one of the most susceptible to climate change, and already routinely experiences floods, droughts, sandstorms and cyclones.

Hong Kong's first district elections saw a turnout of 27.5 percent, the government said Monday, a record low for a race that had shut out all opposition candidates. China has barred pro-democracy candidates from entering the race this year, reserving the ballot for "patriots."
