Former Spanish soccer federation president Luis Rubiales will stand trial on charges of sexual assault and coercion for kissing forward Jenni Hermoso without her consent after last year's Women's World Cup final, a Spanish judge confirmed.

This follows an incident where he kissed Spanish national team player Jenni Hermoso without her consent after the Women's World Cup final. The event, which occurred in August 2023, drew widespread attention and sparked discussions regarding sexism within sports. 

A Madrid court has formally ordered Rubiales to stand trial. The charges against him include one count of sexual assault, punishable by up to a year in prison, and another count of coercion. This latter charge relates to allegations that Rubiales attempted to pressure Hermoso into publicly stating that the kiss was consensual. 

In addition to Rubiales, three others, including the team's former coach Jorge Vilda, will also stand trial for coercion, facing potential prison terms of up to 18 months. Rubiales has refuted all accusations of misconduct, previously describing the act as a consensual peck. Conversely, Hermoso has denounced the kiss as "unwanted and demeaning" and has accused Rubiales and others of attempting to minimize the incident's severity. 

Following the backlash, Rubiales resigned from his position and received a three-year ban from FIFA. Besides the charges stemming from the World Cup incident, he is also being investigated in a separate corruption case related to his tenure as the head of the Spanish soccer federation.

Rubiales has denied any wrongdoing and at the time called the gesture a consensual peck, but Jennifer Hermoso said it was unwanted and demeaning, and accused Rubiales and others of asking her to downplay the incident. Rubiales resigned in the aftermath of the scandal and was handed a three-year ban by FIFA. He's also under investigation in a separate corruption case involving his time at the head of the Spanish federation.
