Eastern Libyan authorities have sent hundreds of Sudanese back to their war-torn home country, officials said Saturday, in a crackdown on migrants seeking to flee conflict and poverty for Europe by way of the Mediterranean nation.

Authorities in eastern Libya have deported 700 Sudanese migrants back to Sudan as part of a campaign against illegal migration and human trafficking. The migrants, detained in central and southeastern Libya, were sent by land to Sudan, according to the Directorate for Combating Illegal Migration.

Some of those deported were reported to have infectious diseases such as hepatitis and AIDS, while others were removed due to criminal convictions or security concerns. The crackdown, led by forces under military commander Khalifa Hiftar, also involves intercepting boats and raiding trafficking hubs in the region.

The Directorate for Combating Illegal Migration in Eastern Libya said in a statement. The statement further confirmed that some of the deportees suffered from infectious diseases including hepatitis and AIDS. Others were deported because of either criminal convictions or security reasons. The deportation was part of an ongoing crackdown campaign on migrant trafficking in Eastern Libya, which is controlled by forces of powerful military commanders Khalifa Hiftar. Last week, the coast guards in Eastern Libya said it intercepted a boat carrying 80 Europe-bound migrants off the eastern city of Tobruk. The campaign includes raids on trafficking hubs across eastern and southern Libya.

The Trump administration said on Saturday (July 19) it will take action against Mexico under its "America First" policy, saying the Mexican government's earlier decision to cut flight slots in Mexico City, which affects U.S. airlines, violates a bilateral air agreement.
