The celebrated coach died on Friday, a day after he was shot on the campus of Laney College in Oakland, California. Kelly O'Grady joins us now with more on his impact and the arrest police have made in the case. Kelly, good morning. Good morning to you, Dana. Well, Beam retired from coaching in 2024, but he stayed on at Laney College in his role as athletic director. Now, police say the suspect in the shooting targeted Beam and was known to loiter around the campus. Sit down and tell me what you're doing. Number one on four down, we can't take a sit down. As the subject of season five of Netflix's Last Chance U. Yes, Kenny, that's what I'm talking about. Yes. John Beam gave his Laney College players a crash course in football and in life. Why are you talking when he's talking? Despite his tough approach, Beam developed deep bonds with generations of players, many of whom were passed over by other teams. At a news conference Friday, Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee paid tribute to Beam's decades of mentorship. Coach Beam's legacy isn't measured in championships or statistics, even though they are great. It's measured in the thousands of young people he believed in, mentored, and refused to abandon. Beam was shot Thursday on Laney's campus. In announcing his death Friday, former deputy, Chief Frederick Chavez, described Beam's impact as a father figure. He had meant so much to me. I lost my father when I was in high school, and Coach has always been there for me, has always reached out to me, and it's not just me. A suspect, identified as Cedric Irving Jr., was arrested early Friday morning. Police did not release a motive, but did say the suspect and Beam knew each other. This was a very targeted incident, and I will say that Coach Beam, although they did not have a close relationship, was open to helping everybody in our community, and this is not uncommon for him. Beam's former players, 20 of which have gone on to play in the NFL, are paying tribute to him online. Others, like Benji Ross, went to the hospital shortly after the shooting. He drove us hard, you know, he may have made you cry a couple of times, but at the same time, he really loved you. But I definitely had to come, because that's like family. Police say surveillance video led to that arrest, and this was the second shooting on Oakland school campuses in as many days. A student was shot Wednesday at the same high school where John Beam once coached football. Those shootings don't appear to be connected. Such a loss for the community, but at least you see the legacy living on in his players. Yeah, and you can hear the emotion in the reaction. It's just, it really is such a loss. Thanks, Kelly.
