The report, dated November 25, highlighted the 2012 murder of Agnes Wenjiru, for which a British soldier was recently arrested in the UK after years of advocacy by her family and local rights groups.

The inquiry emphasized that many victims have lacked avenues for redress and called for further investigation and accountability. The British Ministry of Defence expressed regret over the challenges arising from its presence in Kenya and stated its willingness to investigate new allegations if evidence is provided.

The committee's report, dated November 25, said it had uncovered a disturbing trend of sexual misconduct by Batuk personnel, marked by rape, assault and abandonment of children fathered by soldiers. The most prominent allegation relates to the 2012 murder of 21-year-old Agnes Wenjiru near the British forces' training camp in the town of Nanyuki. The suspect, a British soldier named Robert Perkis, was arrested in Britain last month. It came after years of campaigning by Wenjiru's family and Kenyan rights groups, who said her killers were being shielded by a defence cooperation agreement between the two countries. Perkis, who now faces extradition hearings, has denied any involvement in Wenjiru's death. Wenjiru's sister, Rose, says the report has given her hope after so long. But more than a decade after her sister's death, she says she is still waiting for closure, especially as the baby Wenjiru left behind for her sister to raise is now a teenager. Nairobi-based lawyer Kelvin Kubai says the report represents something larger than one family's tragedy. Why this report is quite fundamental is on the fact that many victims of British activities have had no channel for redress. So this committee coming up with this report and in extension recommendation, it offers a channel for redress for the many victims of these interactions between the British army and the Kenyan civilian component. Thousands of British troops can pass through Kenya for training missions in any given year. Batuuk said in a statement it has zero tolerance for sexual exploitation and abuse and takes any allegations very seriously. A spokesperson for Britain's defence ministry said in a statement to Reuters it deeply regrets the challenges that have arisen in relation to our defence presence in Kenya. It added it was prepared to investigate new allegations in the report once evidence is provided.
