Kimmel became very emotional last night as he announced that Escobedo, his longtime friend, has died. Escobedo was just 59 years old. He had been with the show since it premiered back in 2003. And he and Kimmel had been friends since they were little kids, eight or nine years old, I think he said. Vlad takes a look back on Escobedo's remarkable life. Despite a booming applause, late night host Jimmy Kimmel went on stage last night fighting back tears. We've been on the air for almost 23 years. And I've had to do some hard monologues along the way. But this will, this one's the hardest. The comedian paid tribute to the leader of his show's in-house band, Cleto Escobedo III, the man who had been behind the saxophone since the show's inception in 2003. It's our first show. You like the band? Man, I love the band. But Kimmel knew Cleto long before arriving in Hollywood. There was a boy who lived on my block. He lived across the street and two houses over. His name was Cleto, but we all called him Junior. The two met when Kimmel moved to Las Vegas at the age of nine. One summer, I slept over at the Escobedo house 33 nights in a row. They performed in school bands together. Cleto was a phenomenal saxophone player. From a very young age, he was a child prodigy. Cleto grew up as the son of a professional musician and became one himself. Oh, Cleto, sing it to me. He went on tour with Paula Abdul and even had his own album. So when Kimmel got his own show, he said, Not only did I want Cleto to lead the band, I wanted his dad to be in the band. A moment Cleto recalled in a 2021 interview. Jimmy called and said, hey man, I got this. I think I'm gonna have this show. Do you wanna be my band leader? Of course I was like, yes. Cleto and his father auditioned and for the next 23 seasons, they've spent every weeknight together. He was just a great older brother. No baggage, all love. There's no one in my life I felt more comfortable with. It's unclear how Cleto died, but Kimmel says he'd been in the hospital for the past few months and he thanked the staff there who cared for him. Kimmel also announced the show will take a few days off to grieve. Sending a lot of love to Jimmy Kimmel today. Yeah. You can all imagine how that would feel to lose somebody that close to you. You know what I think about that story though? It's called the special randomness of childhood. This just happens to be the person across the street in two houses down that becomes your best friend and then you spend your life together. We live a dream together on national television for millions of people to enjoy. You can't, I mean, it's heartbreaking, but it's also very beautiful. And the dad is still in the band? Dad's still in the band. Wow.
