The Park 24 Group 2025 Tokyo Grand Slam began at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium, featuring six reigning world champions and high-level judo competition. Japanese judokas dominated several categories, with Wakana Koga, Sanchiro Murao, Uta Abe, Akari Omori, and Haruka Kaju each winning gold in their respective weight classes. 

International athletes also made their mark, as Ilya Sulemanidze of Georgia and Valery Endovitsky of Russia secured gold medals in the under 100kg and over 100kg divisions, respectively. The tournament is significant for athletes aiming for selection in the upcoming World Championships and Olympic Games.

Welcome to Japan, the home of judo. It's day one of the Park 24 Group 2025 Tokyo Grand Slam in the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium. With six reigning world champions today, the stage was set for an incredible day of action. At under 48 kilograms, Sachio Yoshino faced Wakana Koga in the first all-Japanese final. A yuko score into a hold-down gave Koga Japan's first gold medal of the tournament. She was awarded the gold by IJF Vice President, Mr. Obaide Lanzi. The under 90 kilogram final saw local hero and current world champion, Sanchiro Murao, take the gold medal against teammate, Goki Tajima. Murao held nothing back, scoring Ippon to claim top spot. He was awarded his medal by IJF Vice President, Dr. Laszlo Tott. At under 52 kilograms, Uta Abe had a closely fought contest against teammate, Nakano Tsubone. A yuko score saw Abe clinch the victory. It's a very important competition for next year's selection for the Worlds and for the Olympic Games. IJF Ambassador, Her Imperial Highness, Princess Tomohito of Mikasa, awarded the medals. The under 100 kilogram final saw Ilya Sulemanidze of Georgia face home favorite, Dota Arai of Japan. A beautifully executed tsuyo-toshi earned gold for the Georgian. When I was a child, always seeing Tokyo Grand Slam, and I always want to win. I'm so happy. This is the most difficult Grand Slam, and I'm happy for gold medal. The medals were awarded by Georgia Minister of Defense, and the medals were awarded by Georgia Minister of Sport, Mr. Shalva Gogoladze. In another all-Japanese final, Akari Omori overcame Momo Tamayoki in a closely fought technical battle for under 57 kilogram glory. She was awarded the gold medal by IJF EC member and Kodokan President, Mr. Haruki Uemura. At plus 100 kilograms, Valery Endovitsky of Russia produced an incredible buzzer beater against home favorite, Hyoga Otter of Japan, to snatch a dramatic victory. He was awarded his medal by IJF General Treasurer, Mr. Nasa Altamimi. Haruka Kaju won the last all-Japanese final of the day. A well-timed transition after a yuko score into a hold-down showed just why Kaju is the current world champion at under 63 kilograms. She was awarded the gold medal by IJF Head Sport Director, Mr. Vladimir Barta. Day one delivered from start to finish. We'll see you tomorrow for day two.
