Israeli shelling and airstrikes have resulted in the deaths of dozens of Palestinians near Khan Younis, according to Gaza medics. The fatalities occurred following new evacuation orders issued by Israel for several neighborhoods in southern Gaza, which the Israeli military identified as sources of renewed militant attacks. The area was heavily bombarded with tank salvos and airstrikes, with the Gaza Health Ministry reporting the deaths of several women and children, and numerous other injuries.

Prayers were held outside Khan Younis' Nasser Hospital, where medical personnel described the situation as "out of control" due to the influx of casualties. Ayman al-Khawaji, whose sister was among the deceased, referred to the strikes as a "massacre of civilians." Palestinian officials stated that the targeted areas are home to approximately 400,000 people and claimed that the evacuations began without sufficient warning, forcing many to flee on foot or using donkey carts.

An Israeli military statement attributed the bombings to counter renewed Palestinian militant attacks, including rocket launches from the targeted regions in eastern Khan Younis. To assist in the evacuations, Israel has adjusted the boundaries of a humanitarian zone in al-Mawassi to ensure civilian safety away from combat zones. The ongoing conflict has seen Israel vow to eradicate Hamas following an assault by the group on October 7, which resulted in 1,200 Israeli deaths and over 250 hostages taken. As of the latest reports, Gaza health authorities place the death toll among Palestinians at more than 39,000.

Medics said the Palestinians were killed by tank salvos in some towns just east of Hanounis, with the area also bombarded by air. The Gaza Health Ministry said the dead included several women and children and that dozens of others had been injured by Israeli fire. The Hamas-run ministry does not distinguish between militants and civilians in its death tallies. Outside of Hanounis' Nasser Hospital, prayers were held for victims of the strikes. Medical staff there said that the situation at the medical facility, where a large number of casualties were being treated, was, quote, out of control. Ayman al-Khawaji, whose sister was killed, branded it a, quote, massacre of civilians and said many were asleep when the attacks happened. Palestinian officials said 400,000 people are living in the targeted areas, adding that those asked to evacuate were not given time to leave before the Israeli strikes began. Some families fled on donkey carts, others on foot carrying mattresses and other belongings. Jabhat al-Beit is among them.
