Explosions were reported in the Iranian city of Isfahan, with Iranian television quickly broadcasting images and music intended to convey normalcy around the city's strategic facilities. Despite the incidents, which were described by some sources as an Israeli attack, Tehran has signaled a notable absence of intent to retaliate, pointing towards a desire to prevent a broader conflict in the region. 

Following the explosions, flight patterns were altered, diverging from their usual routes near Isfahan. Concurrently, Israeli media outlets suggested that the attack could have been conducted by Israel. This speculation was further supported by unnamed U.S. officials, as reported by ABC and the New York Times, who claimed that Israel executed a limited offensive operation. This was said to be in retaliation for a direct assault by Iran on Israel the previous Sunday, which was itself a response to an Israeli action targeting its consulate in Damascus. The consulate attack was linked to ongoing tensions between Iran's proxies and Israel, as well as the conflict in Gaza.

The target near Isfahan reportedly lies in a region housing critical facilities, including potential nuclear research laboratories and the Natanz nuclear facility, alongside drone and advanced ballistic missile production sites. Analysts suggest that the choice of target indicates Israel's reserved right to strike more sensitive locations while aiming to avoid further escalation of hostilities. Both nations have demonstrated a capacity for retaliation, yet there appears to be a mutual interest in avoiding an escalatory spiral leading to wider conflict.



Iran signals no retaliation against Israel after drone attack

Isfahan on Friday morning. With these images and music, Iranian TV sent out a message. Everything is calm in the central city and around its strategic facilities. Hours earlier, the day started with a news flash reporting on suspected explosions near the city. The airlines diverted their flights. Roughly at the same time, Israeli stations aired their own news flashes saying that an alleged attack had been attributed to Israel. Unnamed U.S. officials told ABC and the New York Times that Israel launched a limited strike – the latest retaliation after Iran attacked Israel directly last Sunday in response to an Israeli strike on its consulate in Damascus, linked to fighting between Iran's proxies in the region and Israel, and to the war in Gaza. There are a host of targets Israel could have hit in Iran in the vicinity of Isfahan to include some nuclear research laboratories, the Natanz nuclear facility, as well as production facilities for drones and other advanced ballistic missile capabilities. They chose this target probably because it was none of those and could demonstrate while Israel reserves the right to strike those more sensitive targets, they weren't going to do that this evening. With every alleged strike, Israel and Iran have tried to show they had the capacity to retaliate while hoping to avoid an escalation.

The US State Department accused Russia of having used a chemical weapon against Ukrainian forces in violation of the Chemical Weapons Convention, while also announcing fresh sanctions against Moscow. In addition to the chemical agent chloropicrin, Russia also used "riot control agents (tear gas) as a method of warfare in Ukraine, also in violation of the CWC," the department said in a factsheet.
