One user, a high school teacher, was accused of violating child sexual exploitation standards despite not posting for months and having no content that would trigger such a suspension. A petition with over 34,000 signatures has called for Meta to increase transparency and improve its appeal process, as users find it difficult to reverse AI-driven decisions.

Meta has stated that it uses a combination of human and AI moderation, and that users can appeal suspensions if they believe a mistake has been made. However, some users, including those managing community pages, report being locked out of their accounts for extended periods without clear explanations. In at least one case, an account was reinstated only after media intervention.

Megan Conte says it came out of nowhere. A ban on her Instagram account and a note from parent company Metta accusing her of violating the company's standards on child sexual exploitation. I was very surprised. I was pretty hurt actually especially considering what I do for a living. Conte is a high school teacher and says there's nothing on her account that would trigger such a suspension. In fact, she says she hasn't posted in months. I had a lot to lose when I lost my Instagram account. I had about 10 to 15 years worth of photos. She suspects the company's artificial intelligence moderating tools wrongfully flagged her account and she isn't the only one. A petition with more than 34,000 signatures says Metta is relying too much on AI technology. These platforms need to be more transparent and users deserve a way to appeal that actually works. Metta says it uses a combination of people and technology to monitor profiles but one analyst says AI is most likely the culprit. It's AI that is deciding to deny those individuals access to those accounts and there is literally no one that they can call to get those decisions reversed. In a statement, a Metta spokesperson says it takes action on accounts that violate our policies and people can appeal if they think we've made a mistake. Laura Thomas says she's been locked out of her accounts for weeks now, including one used to share information about a local hockey association where she's a board member. She was told one of her posts violated community standards but not which one or how. It's all just for connection, right? Connecting with others and when that's taken away, it just, it's very hard.
