A mass food poisoning outbreak in West Java has resulted in over 1,000 children falling ill after consuming meals supplied by Indonesia's Free School Meals program. Hospitals in the area struggled to treat the affected students, who reported symptoms such as stomach pain, nausea, and headaches. 

The Free School Meals program, launched as a major government initiative to combat child stunting, has faced scrutiny after independent monitors reported that more than 6,400 children have fallen ill since its inception, with some incidents linked to expired ingredients. Despite government assurances of strict food safety standards, public trust in the program has been shaken.

Doctors say an outbreak of food poisoning struck earlier this week, leaving more than a thousand students sick across the region. Seven-year-old Mikaela was among children who fell ill after eating meals at school, supplied for free under a government program. At first, the food was fine, but when I got home, I vomited, my stomach hurt, and I had a headache. Parents could only watch helplessly as their children fell ill. Nearby hospitals struggled to cope. Most of them complained of stomachache, then nausea, some experienced shortness of breath, so the treatment we carried out was in accordance with the symptoms complained of by the patient. We carried out rehydration measures, gave IVs, and gave medicine through the IVs so that the effect would be faster. Launched in January, the Free School Meals program was built as a way to combat stunting, a growth disorder affecting one in five Indonesian children. It was the centerpiece of President Prabowo Subianto's election campaign, a $28 billion initiative to feed 80 million students. But independent monitors say more than 6,400 children have fallen ill since the scheme began, some after eating ingredients reported to have been passed their use-by date. The government says meals are prepared to strict standards. It is in accordance with the standard operating procedure. The latest technical instructions are often updated according to the standard operating procedure. Then the quality control is also carried out by nutritionists. In hospitals, trust has been shattered. Parents say they no longer believe food at schools is safe. The program designed to fight hunger has instead become a public health scandal.
