AccuWeather's Geoff Cornish breaks down the snowy start to December across much of the northern U.S.

According to the latest snow analysis, 45.4% of the contiguous United States was covered in snow as of 1 a.m. on December 5th, marking the highest snow coverage for this date in 20 years. Additional snowfall after the analysis, especially in Virginia, has further increased the total snow-covered area.

Significant accumulations were reported, including four inches south of Richmond in Petersburg, Virginia. Cold conditions are expected to keep snow on the ground in the Midwest and Northeast, with more snow and potential travel disruptions forecasted through the month of December.

Impressive: Almost half of country covered in snow

this is pretty impressive. Take a look at this. Almost half of the country is covered in snow as of one a.m. Back on Friday morning when the most recent snow analysis was captured, there was snow still falling and actually there's more snow on the ground than even the statistic represents because the snow has since filled in into Virginia. But look at this 45.4% of the nation, at least a contiguous 48 states here covered in snow. That's the greatest amount of snow cover on December 5th in 20 years. The last time we had a December 5th with more snow cover than this was just a little bit more about 47 plus percent on December 5th of 2005 20 years ago. So what this map does not represent was the additional snow that fell since that one a.m. Capture. And you can see much of Virginia has had snow pretty significant. Four inches reported south of Richmond in Petersburg, Virginia, and that is going to be snow cover that at least for many of us sticks around for a short time with that cold air in the mid Atlantic. But for many of us in the Midwest of the Northeast, the snow cover will stick around for quite a while. More rounds of snow in through next week. Multiple Alberta Clippers will reinforce the snow cover for many of us. More travel disruptions and the cold will hold for the most part through the month of December.
