Confluent, which had been exploring a sale after its stock performance declined post-IPO, attracted interest from several potential buyers. The move comes amid a surge in technology sector mergers and acquisitions, with IBM's shares rising on news of the deal, reflecting investor confidence in the company's direction.

So it's unusual I suppose that the acquirers shares are up in this deal. So investors seem to like it. Why is IBM making this move now to acquire a confluent. It's a great sign that shares are up. That means that investors are confident in M&A and consolidation. And dealmakers love to see that because when one big company's acquire stock goes up others take note and other boardrooms you know then get the confidence to make a move. But in terms of why IBM is doing this now for years Arvin Krishna the CEO has been looking to do more tuck in acquisitions after the big hashy core deal of a few years ago. But this is sort of his first big foray back into big M&A. And if investors like it we could be seeing more right. Including debt this deal is worth eleven billion dollars. Nora mentioned that confluence a data streaming company. But what exactly does it do and why was it exploring a sale. So over the summer reports first came out that it was exploring a sale. The stock had been down sort of since the IPO. But it was it was doing OK and hanging in there. And then it brought on an investment bank as it started to get takeover interest from IBM perhaps other companies and private equity. It was reported. But I think this idea that companies like confluent are sort of in the guts of A.I. This is a trend that big infrastructure players are saying OK we need to buy companies that kind of fit in this theme of A.I. but in a way that kind of provides more services to their customers. So maybe it's not necessarily an A.I. bet for IBM even if they're saying it is. It's something else that they could provide to their enterprise customers. Right. It's an A.I. deal that doesn't involve data centers for once. Talk a little bit about or put this deal into the context of tech M&A so far. It's just been so busy. We just had a story in our deals newsletter today about you know headed for a trillion. A lot of the deals are not necessarily straight M&A happening in tech. You might have seen a lot of the open A.I. big fundraising rounds. Some of these circular data center deals. But if you just look at the Netflix Warner Brothers deal that we keep talking about that has also a tech theme. So a lot of these you know big tech companies are starting to look at M&A. We saw Google and whiz earlier this year. You know IBM also has closed some some larger deals. So it's exciting to see.
