Hurricane Lee batters the East Coast

Lee packed a punch, bringing powerful waves and rip currents to North Carolina, then rough surf in New England. This is definitely why I live here. Doesn't get better than this. It was a nerve wracking week for some people watching the forecast. Lee exploded from a Category one hurricane to a cat five near the Caribbean islands. Leave and lost strength as it moved north into cooler waters. My grandfather always used to come and watch waves during storms. And since he's been gone, we try to do it now. Tree limbs and power lines came down across coastal Massachusetts. A police cruiser was crushed by a falling tree. Cape Cod was spared from the worst of the wind. It's definitely relieving knowing that, you know, nothing too bad will happen. Everyone's houses will be okay. Farther north waves crashed over seawalls in Maine. It's one of the biggest storms in a while, so got pretty excited and decided to make the day trip down here. Surfers made the most of the storm. Thousands of families lost power. Police say one man was killed near Searsport when a tree and power lines fell on his car to us. It's more like a nor'easter, but in the warmer weather, Lee pounded Nova Scotia with 70 mile an hour winds and huge waves as it made landfall Saturday afternoon on Long Island. The wind field dramatically expanded, and that's bringing the storm surge throughout the southern coastline of Nova Scotia all the way to Peggy's Cove. Work is now underway to clear down trees and fix damaged power lines after Lee's dramatic journey from the open Atlantic off the east coast up through Canada. For AccuWeather, I'm Bill Waddell.
