When the Chama River burst its banks, the force of the rushing water swept away everything in its path. In this town, in Mered Estate, in the northwest of Venezuela, homes and roads were destroyed. The economy here is totally affected because farmers living in the highlands can't harvest their crops. We have no way to get around, no access to drinking water, and some parts of the community have no electricity. Governments tried to salvage what they could. The state government says hundreds of families have been affected by the flooding. Some people in these poor communities have lost everything. One of the main roads running through Mereda was closed because of mudslides and falling trees, leaving parts of the state isolated. It's the rainy season in this part of Venezuela, and tropical weather patterns provoked intense downfalls here. In some areas, it rained non-stop for 12 hours.
