CBS News meteorologist Rob Marciano gives an update on developing storms as Humberto became a hurricane on Friday.

Humberto has developed into a hurricane in the central Atlantic and is forecast to potentially reach Category 3 or 4 strength in the coming days. Meteorologists are also tracking a separate disturbance near Hispaniola, expected to be named Imelda, which could approach the Carolina coast as a tropical storm or hurricane.

Forecast models indicate that Imelda could bring heavy rain and strong winds to the Carolinas, with rainfall expected to begin over the weekend and continue into the following week. There is also a possibility that Humberto could interact with Imelda, potentially absorbing or redirecting it, though this scenario is considered less likely. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely due to the risk of significant rainfall and potential flooding.

We are watching a growing weather threat to the eastern United States. Two systems near the Caribbean are moving north and they could impact the Carolinas early next week with heavy rain and powerful winds. Let's go to CBS News meteorologist Rob Marciano. Rob, good morning. Hey, good morning. Nate Umberto is now a hurricane in the middle of Atlantic forecast to become our next major hurricane, a cat of the quarter three or four in the coming days. And this is our yet to be named disturbance over the island of Hispaniola. It's the next storm name on the list is Imelda and the National Hurricane Center is saying it's likely that it will do that. So let's talk about the potential baths with Imelda because it is so close to us and most of our computer models as of yesterday afternoon and this morning are bringing it towards the Carolina coastlines Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday of next week, potentially as a tropical storm or a hurricane. But Umberto, if it gets big and strong enough and close enough to Imelda, it will actually absorb it or fling it out to see what's called the Fuji war effect. That is the best case scenario at this point, the least likely scenario. So we're certainly concerned about that. As far as the rainfall with this, we're gonna get that for sure. And we'll get a bunch of rain over the weekend across the Carolinas preceding this event, 2 to 4 inches and then another several inches of rain as we head towards next week. So that's gonna be an issue. The last time we had a rainfall preceding a system like this was one year ago.
