And while those promotions are often a way to save money on big-ticket items, think electronics, cosmetics, appliances, there are some other ways to get even more bang for your buck through price matching or price protection. For more on this, let's bring in Kaitlin Mehar. She is a staff writer at The New York Times Wirecutter covering the latest deals and sales. So, Kaitlin, I didn't even know that this was something that you could ask for. But first, walk us through price matching and what stores offer this. Sure. So price matching is something you can ask for, and there's no shame in doing it. There are stores that offer it from Best Buy to Home Depot, Newegg, like other online retailers. But what you have to do is really just ask. Sometimes it's via a form. Sometimes it's contacting their customer support. But it really doesn't hurt. You just have to ask. And then I'm always like, oh, do I buy it? I don't know if it's going to go on sale more. And I just have this, like, constant push and pull. Price protection. I also didn't know that this is a thing. So how does this work, and where can you take advantage of it? The FOMO is real, so I understand. Price protection, price match guarantees, price adjustments. There's all kinds of different words for it that retailers use. Don't let that confuse you. What you need to know is if they will refund you the difference when an item drops later. The basic parameters are pretty simple. It just needs to be an identical product. It needs to be on a list of approved competitors by the retailer. Sometimes you need a little bit of proof in the form of a screenshot or just pulling up your phone and showing somebody. But a lot of retailers will do it. Again, Best Buy, even Costco. I have coworkers that have gone back after months and gotten price adjustments from Costco. That's amazing. It's amazing. Yeah. I was just going to say, how long? Is it, like, indefinite? Or is it generally, like, within a few months? It depends on the retailer. Some it's within 10 days. Some you've got a couple of weeks to a month. Costco's, like I said before, is, I believe, a year. So you just have to read the fine print. Are stores more apt to say yes these days because of the current economic climate? What else should people know about this? I think that it depends on who you get a lot of the time. I have personally gone into stores that I know offer price-matching policies. And when I speak to their customer support, they go, no, we don't actually do that. So it's less about corporate policies, and it more depends on who you're speaking to. Gotcha. All right.
