Rise of AI

A recent CNBC flash survey of around 20 senior HR leaders from the CNBC Workforce Executive Council found that artificial intelligence is already affecting job roles and company operations. While 22% of respondents said AI is having no impact on jobs, half reported that fewer than half of their organization's jobs were affected, and 17% said nearly half or more were impacted. Looking ahead, 45% expect AI to impact nearly half or more of all jobs within the next year.

The survey also revealed that HR leaders are increasingly focusing on skills-based hiring for AI-related roles, rather than traditional degrees. Most respondents noted that AI has made their companies more efficient and innovative, though some believe it is too early to measure the full impact. The importance of AI literacy is emphasized for both current workers and students, as these skills are expected to be essential across a wide range of industries.

Sharon Epperson, she joins us now with the survey results. Good morning. Good morning, Andrew. You know, AI, of course, is changing the way that HR leaders think about their workers. So over the past week, CNBC conducted a flash survey of about 20 senior HR leaders, all members of the CNBC Workforce Executive Council. We wanted to get their views on the impact of AI on jobs. 22% said AI is having no impact on jobs at all. By impact, we mean a significant portion of an employee's previous tasks have been automated, or the way they work on a daily basis has changed. Now, 50% of the HR leaders said fewer than half of jobs at their organizations were impacted by AI, while 17% said nearly half or more than half of jobs were impacted, and 11% said they weren't sure. As you might expect, that'll change in the next 12 months. 45% said AI will impact nearly half or more than half of all jobs in the next year. 44% said less than half of all jobs will be impacted, and 11% said none will be impacted. In fact, the same number of leaders expect headcounts will increase as those who expect a decrease in the next 12 months, while 38% said their companies will maintain their current headcounts. And for HR leaders who plan to reduce their workforce over the next year, a general need to cut costs was the only reason chosen. Not inflation, not tariffs, decreased demand, or efficiency from AI. In fact, 61% of HR leaders said AI has made their company more efficient. 39% said it's too early to tell, and 78% said AI has made their workforce more innovative, while 17% said AI has not made a significant impact on its workforce yet. These HR leaders say learning how AI can augment human interactions is critical. It's an opportunity to accelerate the human experience, not to replace it, Andrew. It's a pesky thing. I don't see how. So just help me with this. Did the members of the CNBC workforce, this council, the executive council, offer other insights exactly about how they expect AI to evolve, if you will, inside the workplace? Well, we did get some comments from some of them, and some said it's just too early to tell. Others said that you don't wanna just chase an AI product without really understanding how your workforce is gonna use it, just because you think it's the next best thing. The other thing that they said is when they're, in terms of hiring, they're gonna look at skills-based AI hiring, not the traditional degrees that people think that you need to have for certain roles. And what's gonna be interesting, though, is as they're looking at this increased efficiency, how are they actually measuring that, and how are they, the time that may be saved for different jobs, how is that gonna work out? Okay, so here's, I'm gonna throw one last question at you, because I have children, Becky's, we all have children at this table, and everyone always says, well, what are you supposed to go learn in this environment? And there's some parents I know who are telling their kids, don't use AI, because you should be learning how to write and do math and all the things. I have sort of come around to the view that actually you want your kids to be super-native AI ninjas, if you will, because that is going to, being a great prompter could ultimately be the skill, strangely enough. Absolutely, I do think it's very important to have those skills, and even in areas where they're saying that it's not gonna have as great an impact, whether that's healthcare jobs or education, some manufacturing jobs, even there, you really need to know AI, because it's gonna work into those skills in some way. It's not an either-or, it's an and. It's an and, yes. You need to know how to communicate, how to write, how to do all of those things. Absolutely. But you need to do this, too. Absolutely, the liberal arts background is still very important, but add to that having those skills and understanding AI, and just figuring out how you can use it just a little bit, and they're already doing that. Many schools are already making sure that students are learning.
