The House voted overwhelmingly to prevent a government shutdown after new Republican Speaker Mike Johnson was forced to reach across the aisle to Democrats when hard-right conservatives revolted against his plan.

temporary. This plan is very temporary. It kicks the can down the road until just after the new year. That's the bad news. The good news is that assuming it clears the Senate, it will keep the government functioning at least for a couple months. On this vote, the yeas are 336, the nays are 95. Two-thirds being in the affirmative, the rules are suspended. The bill is passed. Shutdown seemingly averted. With the government only funded through Friday night, the House overwhelmingly approved Speaker Mike Johnson's so-called laddered approach to keeping the lights on. It funds some programs through January 19th and others through February 2nd. It does not include aid for Ukraine or Israel. Majority Leader Chuck Schumer says he wants the Senate to vote on the bill as soon as possible so President Joe Biden can sign it, which the White House has indicated he will do. Both of us agree, the White House, myself, that if this can avoid a shutdown, it'll be a good thing. In passing the bill, Johnson passed the first big test of his time as Speaker. He took a victory lap for not funding the government with one gigantic spending bill, which is called an omnibus. We are not going to have a massive omnibus spending bill right before Christmas. That is a gift to the American people because that is no way to legislate. It is not good stewardship. Because of the razor-thin Republican majority, Johnson relied on Democrats to get his bill across the finish line, a tactic that led to the ouster of his predecessor Kevin McCarthy. Democrats, only two of whom voted no, took their own victory lap. Let us be very clear. It's the Democrats that have come to save America and to stop this dastardly shutdown. 93 Republicans, including Congressman Chip Roy of Texas, voted no. We promised the American people that we would stand to thwart this administration, cut spending, secure the border. We've delivered on none of that so far. All we've delivered on is increasing the debt four to six trillion dollars. The Speaker acknowledged that House math forced his hand. I want to cut spending right now, but when you have a three-vote majority, as we do right now, we don't have the votes to be able to advance that right now. So what we need to do is avoid the government shutdown.
