Hong Kong elections witness record low turnout

Residents of Hong Kong voted Sunday in the region's first district council election since a 2021 election overhaul. The turnout, however, proved to be a record low. Only about 28 percent of eligible voters chose to participate. This year, China barred pro-democracy candidates from participating, reserving the ballot for patriots, those vetted by authorities in Beijing. Voters who chose to participate were unfazed by the new system. I don't think it's influencing who I choose. I still feel that I have the freedom to vote for whoever I want. District councils are the last remaining major political bodies to be chosen by popular vote. Following legislative changes in July, the proportion of directly elected seats dropped from about 90 percent to about 20 percent. During the last elections in 2019, turnout was also a record, a high of 71 percent. Many of the winners came from pro-democracy parties. But since Beijing imposed a national security law in 2020, most of them have been imprisoned or fled the country. Hong Kong's chief executive lauded the banning of non-Beijing approved candidates. From now on, the district councils will no longer be what they were in the past, platforms to destroy and reject the government's administration, to promote Hong Kong's independence, and to endanger national security. A small pro-democracy activist group had planned a tiny protest outside the polling station where Lee had voted, but 12,000 police had been deployed through the region to prevent disruptions. Police took the demonstrators away before they could begin their protest.
