Heavy snow, rain, and sleet are sweeping toward the East, and some parts of the region could see up to a foot of snow. CBS News' Rob Marciano reports.

A significant winter storm that recently affected the Midwest is now moving into the eastern United States, bringing heavy snow, rain, and sleet. Areas in New England could see up to a foot of snow, while regions farther south are experiencing heavy rain and a wintry mix, leading to travel delays and hazardous road conditions.

Winter storm warnings are in effect for parts of New York and northern New England, with snowfall totals ranging from 2-4 inches in some areas to as much as 12 inches in others. The storm is expected to move out to sea within 12 hours, but cold air and dangerous wind chills will persist in the aftermath, prompting officials to urge caution on the roads.

Heavy snow approaches East after battering Midwest

All right, at this point, we take a peek out of your window. The Midwest fell it over the weekend, but the east will get the winter weather today. Take a look at this radar. Heavy snow and a mix of rain and sleet is inching its way through the eastern half of the US at this moment with up to a foot of snow possible in parts of New England. CBS News meteorologist Rob Marciano is there. Where are you, Rob? Live in Middleton, New York, braving some of the elements. The beanie is already on. Rob, how is it now and how will it be over the next 24 hours? We are just starting to see a few flakes of snow, Errol. So we're on the leading edge of the precip that you showed on the radar, which is expansive. And this area is gonna see anywhere from two to four inches of snow. You go a little bit farther north and west into the winter storm warning, and then you're talking about six, eight, 10, maybe a foot of snow, as you mentioned there. So there is the radar, and it's a mess, really, from Maine all the way down to Macon, Georgia. The southeast, although they need the rain, they're gonna get some heavy rain, and that's gonna cause travel delays and you see a little bit of pink in there, too, along the spine of the Appalachians. That's where we're seeing a little bit of a mix of wintry precip, and that's not fun to drive in either. But the snow is expansive all the way back. It just kind of ended in Cincinnati. It's still coming down in places like Pittsburgh. We may or may not have a live shot of what it looks like on the ground in Pittsburgh. Reports of anywhere from two to three inches at the moment of snow. You see it is piling up, actually, on the roadways there. So a bit of a slow commute in Pittsburgh where the two rivers come together to make the Ohio, and they'll be out of the snow, it looks like, in the next couple of hours, but this morning, certainly on the dicey side. All right, winter storm warnings are posted for a bunch of the Catskills of New York, through Albany and through upstate New York and northern New England, and that's where we'll see the heaviest amounts of snow. So our computer modeling does take this out to sea relatively quickly, but really the next six to 12 hours is gonna be a big, big mess for pretty much everybody on the East Coast. I-95 is gonna be mostly rain, although it will start to have snow in some spots, but well north and west of I-95, that's where we're gonna see six to 10 inches of snowfall, and then cold air coming in for a huge chunk of the eastern part of the country, Errol, behind this. Wind chills will be below zero in places like Chicago and Minneapolis and into the teens and 20s here in the Northeast right into the weekend. So winter has arrived. Embrace it. That's right.
