More than 360,000 residents have been displaced, and the city's major ports and access roads remain blocked, preventing critical food and supplies from entering.

The Hôpital de la Paix stands as the only significant medical facility still operational in the city. Malnutrition cases have surged, especially among children, with over 400 undernourished children treated in a single month. Dr. Sinue, head of the hospital's paediatric ward, noted a 60% increase in malnutrition cases over the past year, with patients suffering from additional health complications like heart and lung disease.

Shelters across the city are overcrowded, such as a former high school now housing 2,300 people. Residents like Nozilia, who fled their homes due to gang violence, face daily struggles for basic necessities. The World Food Programme has delivered over a million hot meals since the beginning of the year but stresses that emergency food aid alone is insufficient. The food supply chain in Haiti needs significant rebuilding to address the ongoing crisis.

Approximately half of Haiti's population, nearly 5 million people, are living with acute hunger as the violence shows no signs of abating.



Haiti gang violence deepens malnutrition

Gang violence in Port-au-Prince has sparked a humanitarian crisis. Essential supply routes to the capital are cut off. So cases of malnutrition are soaring, especially among the most vulnerable. More than 400 underfed children were treated in this hospital in May alone. Baby Princely is a year and a half old, but weighs less than 7 kilos. She's a malnourished child who arrived here in a state of dehydration and shock, and she's anemic as well. She's 18 months old, but weighs only as much as a child of 3 to 5 months. She's still in danger. She needs a second blood transfusion. If not, she's severely anemic so she might not make it. The head of this paediatric ward, Dr. Sinue, has seen the ravages of hunger rise over the past year, with cases up by 60%. As people have been displaced and with the violence, we're seeing ever more severe cases, with side effects linked to heart and lung disease, and problems with their joints as well. This is the only major hospital still functioning in Port-au-Prince. Others in the Haitian capital have been ransacked or destroyed, or still lie in dangerous gangland territory. As the violence continues, Haiti's capital is packed with people in need. We don't want war. We don't want violence. We don't want war. In the west of the city, 2,300 people are sheltering in what was a high school. Nozilia has been living here for nearly a year with her family, including her grandson, 6-month-old baby Rodrigo. Bandits took over our house. This morning I wanted to go there to pick some mangoes to eat, but when I saw them in the neighbourhood, I just had to run away. We eat when we can, but very often we have to go without any food. Today the World Food Programme is delivering hot meals. They've served up more than a million since the start of this year. But their country director says emergency operations alone aren't enough. The whole food supply chain needs to be rebuilt. Haiti is not at risk of being forgotten. It's been forgotten. The levels of malnutrition we're seeing in some areas of Port-au-Prince go beyond emergency levels, beyond critical, comparable to what we see in war zones. The problems here are ongoing. Prices have gone up, people have no income. We need to keep helping a country where almost half the population is living with severe food insecurity. Half the population, that's nearly 5 million people living with acute hunger. And there's no end to Haiti's crisis in sight.
