In a year of dark climate realities, finally some light. Greetings. A very legitimate reason to be hopeful about the global energy markets. The International Energy Agency confirming global demand for planet-warming fossil fuels will peak before 2030. The energy transition is underway and that at this point it is going to happen regardless of the climate policies. For every dollar invested in coal, oil and gas, $1.8 is spent on clean energy. Five years ago, this ratio was about 1 to 1. And take a look at solar investment, 10 years ago when compared to oil, and now for the first time outpacing it. But Canada is charting a different path. Canada is one of the countries that hasn't yet faced the necessity to phase out fossil fuels. Last year, oil and gas investments in Canada were $37 billion. Investment in solar was less than $3 billion. It's in Canada's best interest to take the report that we see today and reports like it and begin placing our bets on the clean economy of the future. Steve Dick took that bet when he started his solar company in 2009, riding waves of changed and cancelled incentives programs. There's a number of manufacturers that actually came to Ontario to manufacture solar panels and inverters. That packed up and left. There's just been so much instability. In Alberta, a seven-month moratorium halted all new renewables projects this summer. There's no reason from a resource perspective that we shouldn't see more solar and wind in Canada. The IEA stressed that current investments won't be enough to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Renewable investments are set to dominate next month's COP28 climate negotiations in Dubai. Jill English, CBC News, Toronto.
