Prosecutors in Germany have named a 26-year-old Syrian man as the suspect in the stabbing attack that killed three people in Solingen. The man, identified as Issa al-Aech, was arrested on Saturday and has been remanded in custody on suspicion of murder and membership in the Islamic State terrorist group. His surname has been withheld in accordance with German privacy laws.

Following his arrest, al-Aech was transported by helicopter to appear before the Federal Court of Justice in Karlsruhe for his first hearing. The incident occurred during the Festival of Diversity, an event commemorating the 650th anniversary of Solingen. The festival was subsequently canceled following the attack.

Reports indicate al-Aech had his asylum claim denied and was slated for deportation last year. Local media sources stated that al-Aech turned himself in to officers on the streets of Solingen. The arrest has brought some relief to the city’s 160,000 residents, although there are concerns about potential exploitation of the event by far-right groups to incite hatred against migrants.

A memorial church service was held, where residents expressed fears that the far-right might gain influence as a result of the attack. There were calls for rigorous security measures and tougher penalties for violent crimes, but also warnings against racism.

Of course we are very afraid that the right wing is getting more and more power and that's definitely not the way. Of course we have to ask some hard questions, but racism is never the answer. It was supposed to run until Sunday, but was subsequently called off.
