The draft law's first reading in parliament sparked mass protests in Tbilisi, with many viewing the proposal as a potential pivot back towards Russian influence.

The United States and European Union have both urged the ruling Georgian Dream Party to abandon the bill. Despite the presidential veto, Parliament, controlled by the Georgian Dream Party and its allies, is expected to overturn the veto.
