The deal between the Australian Government and the mining and energy giant Fortescue has fallen through. Fortescue announced a significant global restructure involving the cutting of 700 jobs and the abandonment of its aim to produce 15 million tonnes of green hydrogen by 2030. Despite this setback, the Prime Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to green hydrogen.

Fortescue's Chairman Andrew Forrest stated that the high costs associated with producing green hydrogen led to the decision. Fortescue will now focus on generating green electricity to reduce power prices. Questions were raised regarding the government's decision to offer Fortescue billions in production tax credits. The Albanese Government indicated their continued support for selected energy initiatives.

Amid this development, the Federal and State Labor Agriculture Ministers raised concerns about the Coalition's nuclear policy, particularly its proximity to 12,000 farms that could be within an 80 kilometre radius of proposed nuclear sites. This controversy centres on the potential risks to food safety in case of a nuclear incident.
