An alert prompted the evacuation of residents from a Clearwater, Florida condo building after significant cracks were found in the structure. The discovery raised concerns about a potential collapse similar to the Surfside incident nearly four years ago, where 98 people lost their lives. Manuel Bojorquez reports that the cracks, more than a foot long and expanding, were found in the garage pillar of the South Beach condo building, as shown in images released by Clearwater Beach Fire and Rescue. 

One resident, Scott May, was among 60 people who evacuated the 12-story building, leaving with only the clothes on his back. Initial assessments suggested that the cracks were smaller than reported, highlighting the urgency of the situation. The cracks were discovered by a construction crew, who noted increasing severity. At present, the situation is considered stabilized, but further structural support is needed to ensure the building's safety.

An engineering firm, Karen’s Engineering, will inspect the condo building to assess when it will be safe for reentry. Last year, the same firm had conducted a partial inspection and found no conditions they believed would compromise safety. Following the tragic Surfside collapse, Florida has enacted laws requiring frequent inspections of buildings and adequate repair funds, impacting over 12,000 structures across the state. Residents in Clearwater Beach have been informed they may be able to return home soon, pending safety confirmations.
