At one of the world's coldest border crossings, Finland is accusing Russia of a cruel practice of bringing desperate, underdressed migrants from the Middle East to the Arctic and then having them ride across the border on bicycles. It's about 250 kilometers from Romansk to here. So they probably didn't arrive by bikes at this Finnish border guard. Suggesting their long journey was well planned. Finland calls it hybrid warfare. With Russia using the migrants to cause internal divisions in Finland, which just recently joined NATO. Therefore Finland yesterday decided to close its entire eastern border for two weeks in order to deter Russia's hostile action. With all land borders now shut, only ports and airports are accepting asylum applications. Russia and its ally Belarus have done this before. Notably dumping thousands of migrants on the border with Poland. Which is the Kremlin's way of harassing adversaries without using military force, says this Finnish analyst. It's something that Russia clearly views that militarily they're stuck in Ukraine. But there's lots of other ways they can just continuously stain the headlines. And this is a way for Russia to again point out that you cannot ignore us. In speeches lately, Vladimir Putin has characterized his war in Ukraine as part of a much larger battle against western values that threatens Russia's existence. What they really want is to dismember and plunder Russia, said Putin. Casting Russia's actions, including the migrant crisis, as acting in self-defense. Closing its borders may put Finland at odds with international obligations not to turn away asylum seekers. Which of course is exactly the predicament Russia wanted to create.
