The discussions center on whether the treaty should mandate reductions in plastic production, with many nations also emphasizing the need to address toxic chemicals and improve recycling and cleanup measures.

Plastic pollution has been identified as a major driver of climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental contamination. The negotiations follow previous talks that ended without agreement, as global plastic production continues to rise and is projected to increase significantly without policy intervention. The current session is the longest yet, with consensus required from all participating nations for any proposal to be included in the treaty.

A landmark treaty on plastic pollution is expected on Tuesday, as the crisis affects every ecosystem and person on the planet. Currently, there is a split over whether the treaty should require cutting plastic production. About 100 countries want to limit production, as well as tackle cleanup and recycling. Many have said it is essential to address toxic chemicals. Plastic pollution is really driving what we call the triple planetary crisis. It's accelerating climate change, biodiversity loss, and polluting every corner of our planet. Talks last year in South Korea were supposed to be the final round, but they adjourned in December at an impasse over cutting production. Every year the world makes more than 400 million tons of new plastic, and that could grow by about 70 percent by 2040 without policy change. We generally are really outraged about what they see in our open environment in terms of plastic pollution. And of course, we also know that it's in our blood and in our bodies and not just quote unquote in nature and ocean. So people want solutions and that's why this matters. About 80 government ministers are attending the talks that will last 10 days, the longest session yet with an adjournment scheduled for August 14.
