Violent clashes between Bedouin and Druze factions in Al Suwayda, Syria, have resulted in the deaths of an estimated 2,000 people and the displacement of over a quarter million individuals this year. Many families, such as those from Suwayda, now reside in makeshift camps, facing difficult living conditions and uncertainty about returning home.

Following the fall of the regime, some Syrians, including young professionals, have begun to return to their homeland. However, an estimated five million people remain displaced, with many unable to return due to destroyed homes and deteriorating conditions in refugee camps.

He says his son was killed for his home, for his honour. Men don't often cry in Syria, but Qasim can't hold back his tears. His son died when Druze fighters attacked Bedouins in the southern Sueda region earlier this year. From President Ahmed al-Sharaa, we demand our rights. We want justice for the blood of our children. But Bedouin fighters also attacked the Druze. Jamal shows us how he was beaten. He says relatives were killed and detained. Forty-eight people were killed, including my cousin. We were asleep when they attacked us. If I could return, I'd go tomorrow. Nothing is more beautiful than a man's home. My house in Sueda was burned down. One hundred and twenty-five families from Sueda live in this makeshift camp. Fighting between Bedouin and Druze factions killed an estimated 2,000 people, and displaced more than a quarter million this year. A stark reminder of the mass uprooting under the Assad regime, hundreds of thousands forced from major cities. In the refugee wave that Europe called a crisis, the most Syrians fled to neighbouring countries. Now a reverse migration is underway since the fall of the regime. Young professionals like Abdelkarim's family are coming home. We didn't want our children to grow up in a foreign country. But not everyone is happy. I enjoyed school in Syria, but I did not like it. The historical moment the country is going through, I did not want to be out of the country during this time, to pay back the debt for the country and for the revolution, because I think all of the achievements I've done in the last 15 years are related in a way or another to the Syrian revolution. All my work, the scholarship I got, the third one is really to apply the knowledge and experience I've got in the UK and internationally to Syria. More than a million people have left the camps, but an estimated five million remain displaced. As the sun rises over the Atme camp in northern Syria, you can still hear children in the background. Some of the people have left tents and makeshift shelters, but a majority of Syrians remain wanting to go home, more than a million of them, but there's nothing to return to. Conditions in the camps are worsening. I'm cold. I have no clothes or shoes. My father will buy me shoes when he gets his salary. We can't go home because it's destroyed. One year after the fall of the regime, new tragedies still unfold. Syria remains a land of contrasts, between tears of pain and tears of joy. This family returned after eight years to a devastated country, beginning slowly to become what it once was.
