Online scams, including fake promotions and mirror websites, are on the rise, particularly around the holiday shopping season. These fraudulent sites often closely mimic legitimate retailers, deceiving both consumers and businesses, and are increasingly easy to create with artificial intelligence tools.

Authorities report a significant increase in such scams during the Christmas period, with criminals using these sites to steal personal data and credit card information. In 2024 alone, fake websites enabled thieves to steal 382 million euros from unsuspecting victims.

So a pirate, a bad player, can easily do something like this with AI and cheat consumers. So if you're looking at any major online retailer, particularly around the holidays, be careful. There's a significant spike that coincides with the Christmas period and these fake websites are set up so that people can try to collect their packages by revealing personal information or even their credit card numbers. In 2024, fake websites allowed those behind them to steal 382 million euros.
