The European Commission has announced a new strategy to promote generational renewal in agriculture across the European Union. With only 12% of EU farmers under the age of 40 and an average farmer age of 57, the Commission warns that this demographic trend poses a risk to food security.

Key measures in the strategy include a proposed start-up grant of up to 300,000 euros for young farmers, expanding the Erasmus programme to include young agricultural entrepreneurs, and creating a European Land Observatory to improve land access. The Commission's goal is to double the proportion of young farmers in the EU by 2040.

Mateo plans to be a caregiver for two years, a status that allows him to maximise his chances of accessing financial assistance necessary to take over the farm. I was in Belgium for free. And when you're 23 and you want to take over a farm, I don't think the bank would agree to give you a loan of 1 million, 1.5 million, if not more, to take over a farm, which in itself is not really profitable. Only 12% of farmers are under 14 the EU. The average age is 57 years. This ageing presents a risk for food safety, warns the European Commission. Last month, the Commission presented a strategy to support generational renewal in agriculture. It proposes to include in the next Common Agricultural Policy a start-up pack of up to 300,000 euros to help young farmers get started. Other measures include the opening of the Erasmus programme for young entrepreneurs to farmers and the creation of a European Land Observatory to promote access to land. The objective? To double the proportion of young farmers in the EU by 2040. For Matteo, the best way to encourage young people to start or stay in agriculture is to ensure fair prices. We want the same prices. We want to be paid as much as possible. It will motivate people. It's because we're always in it and we're passionate about it. Producing milk for 40 cents instead of 50 cents will motivate people to do it. Producing meat at a low price because we don't want to be paid. With a loan of 1 million euros on our heads, we'll find someone who will be motivated to do it. Matteo stressed that consumers have an important role to play by buying local products.
