Turkey’s incumbent President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan will serve an historic third time after his runoff election win against opposition leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu on Sunday. In power for more than 20 years, Erdoğan’s increasingly authoritarian policies have prompted growing unrest and political protest.

This was the first of two victory speeches by Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The second in front of a massive enthusiastic crowd in Ankara where he proclaimed Turkey was the real winner. Erdogan who has already ruled the country for 20 years won another five-year term after narrowly beating a six-party opposition alliance in a runoff. We experienced the most unfair election in recent years said opposition leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu. After Erdogan cast his ballot this morning he handed out cash to some of his supporters who believe that Erdogan is the best choice to fix Turkey's financial crisis and make the country into a great power. Erdogan is a world leader says this man. There's nothing else to say. Making Turkey great again has an appeal. His win means the country's somewhat fractious relationship with NATO will continue. So geopolitically I think he will see this as a public support for the idea of a Turkey that's non-aligned. No longer a member of the transatlantic community but a country that also deals with Russia, deals with its own regional partners. While Erdogan has been praised for his work in helping to negotiate with Ukraine and Russia to secure the Black Sea grain deal he's also blocked Sweden's NATO bid demanding the country take a harsher stance on individuals Turkey sees as terrorists. Some Western officials have expressed concerns about Turkey's growing economic ties with Russia. Russia's President Vladimir Putin congratulated his dear friend Erdogan on the win. Ukraine's president did the same thing but used very different language saying he hoped both countries could cooperate when it comes to the security and stability of Europe.
