Kenya's Wildlife Service (KWS) has been working for years to ensure the safety of critically endangered black rhinos. At the start of the year, 21 of the species were moved to the Loisaba Conservancy, where the rhino has been absent for 50 years.

Endangered black rhino returned to Kenyan conservancy

This is Kenya's critically endangered black rhino. They're back at the Loisaba Conservancy in northern Kenya for the first time in 50 years, reintroduced to what the conservancy calls their rightful habitat. Twenty-one rhinos were moved here from several other conservancies in the country earlier this year due to black rhino sanctuaries running out of space. The process took three weeks. This is Isaac Lekolul, a senior veterinary officer at the Kenya Wildlife Service. All through the translocation process, and even after, we still have a team that is on the ground, just to try and establish how the rhinos are moving around Loisaba and settling down. As of today, some of them have already established their territories, so they are known, and it's easy now even to track them, so it's easy to monitor them going forward. Kenya's black rhino numbers are growing. It now has over 1,000 rhinos, and the government hopes to double that by 2037. But the animal almost went extinct in the 1980s, when media reports say their numbers fell from 20,000 to only 300 due to poaching. Thousands of them have been killed over the years in illegal poaching incidents that feed a demand for rhino horn coming from China and other parts of Asia. The International Union for Conservation of Nature has listed these animals as critically endangered.
