A new study has revealed that elephants aren't afraid of drones, as was previously thought. Their surprisingly calm response to being filmed and tracked by the flying cameras could open new doors for the observation and study of the animals

Researchers in Kenya's Samburu National Reserve have found that elephants are no longer frightened by the presence of quieter drones, which previously caused them to flee due to the noise resembling bees. The study, involving 35 drone trials on 14 known elephant families, demonstrates that when drones are flown at appropriate altitudes and with care, elephants remain calm and do not exhibit undue reactions.

This development is significant for wildlife researchers, as drones provide a non-intrusive platform for observing elephant behavior and collecting digital data. Scientists believe that combining drone technology with artificial intelligence will improve understanding of complex natural ecosystems and support large-scale ecological studies.

In Kenya's Samburu National Reserve, a drone is closing in on a herd of elephants and faced the animals playfully bathe in the Ewaso Nyiro River. The elephants are afraid of bees and previously would flee at the hum of a drone, but not anymore as drones have become quieter. This paper that we're publishing today is really the first foundational paper in what will be a long seam of investigations into elephant behavior using this new platform. And all we've done with this paper is shown that elephants don't necessarily run away from drones and get scared by them. If you fly a drone right, if you fly it high, if you fly it gently, there can be an observational platform from which to observe elephants that they respond to without undue reactions. The introduction of unmanned aerial vehicles in recent years has become increasingly important for research, but scientists also worried about too much intrusion into elephant life. I think the wider context of this is that we need to improve the way that we get data about nature into digital form so that we can understand it better at scale. Nature is fantastically complicated and one of the good news applications of artificial intelligence is going to be that it's going to allow us to understand these multivariate landscapes and what is varying with what in a much better way. It's going to open up our minds to what's happening in these landscapes. In the study, researchers conducted 35 quadcopter drone trials on 14 individually known elephant families in the Zamburu and Buffalo Springs National Reserves.
