Observers, including Nigeria's former president Goodluck Jonathan, stated the recent election was free and fair. Critics within ECOWAS have accused the organization of failing to defend democracy and allowing abuses by the deposed president, while supporters of opposition candidate Fernando Dias claim the people's will has been undermined, further eroding trust in ECOWAS.

The chair of West Africa's ECOWAS bloc, Sierra Leone's president Biok, stepping in what looks like an attempt at a warm embrace from Bissau's junta leaders. They're getting the cold shoulder from much of the region after taking power in what some ECOWAS members call a sham coup launched just hours before presidential election results were due. On the part of ECOWAS, the chair of the authority West African observers say last Sunday's vote was free and fair. Among them was Nigeria's former president. Good luck, Jonathan. He was in Bissau when President Mbalu abruptly announced he was the victim of a coup. It was a ceremony conducted by the head of state himself. The deposed president drove off to the airport in a motorcade and flew out of the country, an unusual exit for a leader claiming to be a victim of a takeover. The West African peacekeeping force known as ECOMIB is meant to prevent coups and ensure a stable political transition. It watched Bissau's military take power without intervening. Inside the ECOWAS parliament, MP Guy Marius Sania warned months ago that a coup was coming. He accused the West African body of behaving like a club for presidents, shielding one another rather than defending democracy. From the parliament, he speaks to Al Jazeera, saying this latest coup is, when too many, a blow to the institution's credibility. ECOWAS stayed silent for too long in the face of Mbalu's abuses and arbitrary rule. And in that silence, he believed he could do anything, even stage his own coup. So ECOWAS must apologize and confront its own failures. Hiding presidential contender Fernando Dias claims victory, his supporters say the people's voice has been stolen and that this deepens the crisis of trust in ECOWAS, already weakened by three breakaway juntas.
