In this region, the magnetic field is only about 60% as strong as elsewhere, exposing satellites to increased radiation and forcing measures such as the Hubble Telescope powering down its instruments when passing through.

Scientists explain that Earth's magnetic field naturally fluctuates and has even reversed in the past, with the last pole reversal occurring 780,000 years ago. While the current changes are part of ongoing shifts and not an immediate breakdown, any potential pole reversal would take thousands of years to complete, giving humanity time to adapt and develop protective measures.

The South Atlantic Anomaly is a kind of a dent in that spot, where Earth's magnetic field is a little bit weak compared to other parts in the world. In this zone, the magnetic field is only about 60% as strong. On the ground, we are protected by the main magnetic field and the atmosphere above us. But for orbiting satellites, it's a gauntlet. Unimpeded radiation can cripple electronics. Hubble Telescope, for example, it turns off the recording when it crosses the South Atlantic Anomaly because so as to protect its electronics. Earth's magnetic field has fluctuated before. The whole thing is produced by this chaotic flow within the Earth's core. And it can reverse and change the direction or stop. Eventually, it could even flip upside down. Where North Pole becomes South Pole, South Pole becomes North Pole. The last time it happened was 780,000 years ago. Even that process will take thousands of years to complete. But for now, the magnetic field isn't breaking. It's shifting, evolving, as it always has. Think about it.
