An international rescue mission more than 1,000 metres underground in southern Turkey is underway to free American spelunker Mark Dickey. The cave expert became ill during an expedition and is unable to make the climb back up on his own.

With its entrance deep in the remote mountains of southern Turkey, imagine descending into that cave and then being unable to climb back out. Trapped one kilometer underground in the cold and distant darkness. That is where rescuers have found American cave explorer Mark Dickey. That's him on the left in the red. Too weakened by illness to climb out on his own. Suffering from gastrointestinal bleeding, he's been stuck way down there since last weekend. Hi, Mark Dickey from nearly a thousand meters. I want to thank everyone that's down here. This video shot by rescuers signaling he's in remarkably good spirit. As you can see I'm up, I'm alert, I'm talking, but I'm not healed on the inside yet so I need a lot of help to get out of here. On the spot treatment has certainly helped. Here he is with an IV. He's even had an underground blood transfusion. Up top, some 150 rescuers from half a dozen countries have gathered to figure out the best, maybe only, way to get Dickey out. He'll likely need to be strapped to a stretcher and then carried, lifted and dragged to safety through near endless steep and narrow crevices. An extremely complicated process that could take days. I do know that the quick response of the Turkish government to get the medical supplies that I needed, in my opinion, saved my life. For now, he and his rescuers wait and prepare.
