Disease threatens second crisis after Libya floods

As the search for survivors and removal of debris continues, relief efforts have turned to disease prevention. The East Libya Health Minister expressed concern that an outbreak of waterborne diseases like cholera could cause even more devastation. Workers in gas masks and protective suits spray disinfectant over what's left of the flattened city. And on-site hospitals say a vaccination campaign has been launched to protect both residents and rescue workers. The minister launched a campaign to give vaccines for all the categories in the cooperation of the National Centre for Disease Control and the Red Crescent. The medical teams who are working on the ground are Libyan, Tunisian, Palestinian and French. There are operation rooms in the devastated areas which faced the disasters. A severe shortage of medical supplies and drinking water means the 30,000 survivors are at risk of diarrhoea, dehydration and malnutrition. On the other side of the country, the Libyan Red Crescent in Tripoli has mobilised to send water aid to Derna. Derna is facing a major shortage of fresh water and we have plenty here. Every day, shipments of bottled water leave here by trucks heading to Derna. The international response has been vast with NGOs and UN missions deployed to Libya. They are joined by emergency teams coming from countries like Italy, France, Russia and Turkey and more are en route.
