They presented evidence such as witness testimony, text messages, and Biden’s memoir to establish his history of substance abuse. Defense attorneys did not dispute his issues with substance abuse but argued that Biden did not view himself as an addict at the time of the gun purchase.

Throughout the trial, Hunter Biden received support from family members, including First Lady Jill Biden. Legal analysts suggest that the Biden family's connections to Delaware might influence the jury’s decision. In addition to this case, Hunter Biden faces separate federal tax charges in Los Angeles.
